Beginning on Thursday, October 24th the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Madonna #2067, hosted their annual yard sale. It lasted for three days and was held at Sylvia Yason’s home just down the street from Saint Elizabeth Seton Church. There were between 10 and 12 people helping with this sale, and a delicious lunch was provided for them by other members. The items for sale ranged from a wide variety of dainty trinkets, glassware, books, clothes, jewelry, and electronics. Each sale allowed the purchaser to “name your price”, which put a genuine spotlight on the generosity of the customers.
When I asked Bernadette Labat, Regent of this court, “What’s the best thing about the yard sale?” She responded, “We enjoy working together, having a good time visiting, and meeting the people who come.” She mentioned that it would not have been possible without the generous help of members of the court Noemi, Peggy, Paulette, Marion, and Mary. Paulette said that she “enjoyed the camaraderie, everyone uniting for one cause”.
The final day of the yard sale wrapped up on Saturday, November 26, a beautiful Saturday morning with temperatures above 77, and Bernadette, Paulette, and Noemi stayed for the final hour and wrapped-up all surplus donations of glassware and other items for donation to the Fall Bazaar, which is an annual rummage sale held by the Seton Ladies at St. Elizabeth Parish Hall.
When checking with Catholic Daughter Joyce about how much the yard sale made, she said “it brought in $1,542.70”. This left a net total profit of $1,477.70 after the $65.00 spent on advertising in the Independent News, which definitely aided in drawing in customers. $1,000.00 of these donations were sent to the Diocese of Phoenix to support our seminarians by covering expenses such as tuition, books and other miscellaneous items needed. The Catholic Daughters have developed a special rapport with the seminarians and want to support them because they are future priests for parishes like St. Elizabeth Seton.
Paulette said that the next yard sale may be held in the spring because the “snowbirds” are still in town, and it would not conflict with the parish Fall Bazaar. It is also very possible that the next location might be at the parish hall rather than at a member’s home.
If you are interested in volunteering, donating items, or becoming a Catholic Daughter, please contact Bernadett Labat at 602-565-6429 or attend their meeting held at noon every 4th Tuesday of the month. Also, watch for ads for the next annual yard sale.
