Lent – A Season of Renewal: Preparing Our Hearts for Our Golden Jubilee

My beloved Parishioners,

Ash Wednesday is upon us. In a few days, ashes will be administered on our foreheads, and we will enter once again into the holy season of Lent—a forty-day journey of desert-dwelling, reflection, and profound conversion. This year, however, our Lenten journey carries a special weight and a unique joy. As we look toward the horizon, we see the approaching celebration of our Golden Jubilee.

Fifty years of faith, community, and service in Sun City is a monumental milestone. But a Jubilee is not merely a look backward at what we have built; it is a spiritual reset. To celebrate fifty years worthily, we must ensure our “spiritual house” is in order. Lent provides us with the perfect tools to do just that through the three pillars of Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving.

The Pillars of our Lenten Preparation

  • Prayer: This is our lifeline. In the busyness of family, parish life, and Jubilee planning, we must not forget the One we are celebrating. Prayer turns our gaze toward God and softens our hearts to hear His voice.
  • Fasting: By denying ourselves small comforts, we create a physical space for God. Fasting reminds us that “one does not live by bread alone,” but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
  • Almsgiving: Our Jubilee is a testament to the generosity of those who came before us. By giving to the poor this Lent, we honor that legacy and recognize Christ in our neighbors.

The Fasting of the Tongue

In a recent reflection, Pope Leo XIV reminded the faithful of a crucial aspect of our Lenten discipline: the power of our words. He emphasized the urgent need to refrain from saying things that might hurt someone.

True fasting is not just about what we put into our mouths, but what comes out of them. As we prepare for our Jubilee, let us be a community that builds up rather than tears down. A cutting remark or a piece of gossip can damage the body of Christ more than we realize. This Lent, I challenge you to fast from criticism and feast on encouragement.

Lessons for the Journey

As we walk these forty days together, let us carry these lessons in our hearts:

  1. Humility: We are all sinners in need of God’s mercy.
  2. Patience: Spiritual growth takes time; be patient with yourself and others.
  3. Charity: Let love be the lens through which you see every member of our parish.

An Invitation to Grace

I would like to personally invite each of you to explore the sacramental life of our parish this season. If your schedule allows, attend daily Mass. There is no better way to start your day than at the Table of the Lord.

Furthermore, I urge you to make use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is the “doorway to the Jubilee”—it washes us clean and allows us to start anew.

Let us move toward Holy Week with open, expectant hearts. When we finally reach the joy of Easter and the celebration of our fifty years as a parish family, may we be found transformed, renewed, and more deeply in love with Christ than ever before.

Peace and Blessings,

Fr. Williams Abba
