A GOD Moment

By Richard French

I have heard others speak of a defining moment when GOD made himself obvious to them. My moment was quiet and solitary. One time, while serving in the navy, I finished my 8 to 12 mid-watch and came up out of the loud, hot, steaming engine room wanting some time for myself before climbing into my bed for a few hours’ sleep. Alone, I wandered up to the bow of the ship and watched as the USS Tulare cut a quiet, fine line in the flat ocean.

As I stood at the very front of the ship, it was amazing to see that the water was as flat as a mirror in the middle of the ocean. I did not think that was even possible. I expected to see at least some waves, but no, it was perfectly flat. Now, as I looked toward the horizon, I could see that we were steaming straight towards a full moon that had already risen and was only a few degrees above the curvature of the earth. It hung above the water and cast a moon-lit light of pale yellow from the horizon directly to the ship. It appeared to be a serene highway which one could easily follow.

It struck me then, that this was GOD’s work, and HE was trying to get my attention. I am not sure how long I stayed there, taking in the reverence of the moment. GOD had reached into my soul and shook me. It is a moment I will never forget and forever be thankful for. My lesson was that GOD is great, GOD is all powerful, and GOD loves me.

We all have moments when GOD tries to get our attention. We must be aware of them. Sometimes it is an illness, a death, some unbearable hardship, or just holding a newborn baby. GOD does work in mysterious ways. Be open to His invitation.
